For this written project, choose a painting medium that you enjoy and have used during this course and look at one historical and one contemporary artist who uses the same medium. Investigate the different ways they use the medium and why you find these appealing and effective. Make a study of packaging or rubbish. Contextual research Alex Hanna Hanna’s paintings have evolved in style over the years. He has gone from realistic, flat, smooth paintings to more abstracted, rough, impasto styles. I find it difficult to identify the subject matter in the later paintings and I don’t recognise the object from the title. This exercise is a study of light. It’s difficult to paint evening light in autumn/winter because the light is cooler that in warm summer time plus it goes dark earlier.

The exercise asks for five sketches, postcard size, in black ink and five sketches in water colour. The criteria were to walk five minutes from your house and record what takes your interest.

Part 5, Ex 5.1: Very detailed painting of plants or weeds
Make one very detailed painting using watercolour, acrylic or oil paint of the plants or weeds in your garden or nearby environment. Use a surface between A5 and A3 in size and paint the surface with a mid-tone colour first.
